Being good at small talk is so beneficial in so many different settings – professionally, personally, and even romantically. But it’s also an art form; it’s a skill not everyone has. The good news is that it’s a skill that can be developed and bettered.

So how can you master the art of small talk? There are some phrases and questions you can throw into your conversations that’ll make you seem like a pro, and keep the convo going. Which ones are we talking about? Next time you’re in a small talk situation, try saying one of these things.

  1. “How’s your day going?”
  2. “I loved your recent post on [social media app/site]”
  3. “I’ve been looking for a good [restaurant/café/bookstore] around here. Any recommendations?”
  4. “Have you been here before?”
  5. “What’s your take on [current event or trend]?”
  6. “There’s a great [item of clothing/accessory]! Where’d you get it?”
  7. “What do you enjoy doing in your free time?”
  8. “What brought you here?”
  9. “I’ve been wanting to read/watch that! Would you recommend it?”
  10. “How do you know [mutual acquaintance]?”
